Adjectives with 的

的 links an adjective to a noun as a modifier.

Pattern

Adjective + 的 + Noun

When an adjective modifies a noun, add 的 between them: "漂亮的花" (beautiful flowers). Single-syllable adjectives often drop 的: "大房子" not "大的房子".

Multi-syllable adjectives always need 的: "漂亮的" not "漂亮花". This is a key rule for natural-sounding Chinese.

这是一朵漂亮的花。

Zhè shì yì duǒ piàoliang de huā.

This is a beautiful flower.

我想买一件新的衣服。

Wǒ xiǎng mǎi yí jiàn xīn de yīfu.

I want to buy a new piece of clothing.

他住在一个大房子里。

Tā zhù zài yí gè dà fángzi lǐ.

He lives in a big house.

Single-syllable 大: 的 is optional.
