Complex 着 Usage

Advanced uses of 着 beyond simple ongoing state, including manner and existence

Pattern

Verb1 + 着 + Verb2 / Place + Verb + 着 + Object

Explanation

Beyond indicating an ongoing state, 着 has several advanced uses. It can describe the manner in which an action is performed (Verb1着 + Verb2), where the first verb describes how the second action is done. It also appears in existential sentences describing what exists at a location.

In manner expressions, 着 connects two verbs where the first describes the posture or method: 站着说话 (speak while standing). In existential sentences, the pattern is Location + Verb + 着 + Object: 墙上挂着一幅画 (a painting hangs on the wall).
