Not Only Didn't...But Instead
Expressing that something not only didn't happen as expected, but the opposite occurred.
Pattern
Subject + 不但没(有)/不 + Expected Result, 反而 + Opposite Result
Explanation
This pattern expresses that not only did the expected outcome not occur, but the opposite happened. It conveys surprise or frustration.
不但没 is used for completed actions (past), 不但不 for habitual or present situations. 反而 introduces the unexpected contrary result.
Examples
吃了药以后,病不但没好,反而更严重了。
Chī le yào yǐhòu, bìng búdàn méi hǎo, fǎn'ér gèng yánzhòng le.
After taking medicine, the illness not only didn't improve, but got worse.
他不但不道歉,反而怪我。

Common Mistakes
他不但没来,反而他走了。

Don't repeat the subject after 反而 when it's the same as the first clause.
