Change of State 了

Sentence-final 了 indicates a new situation or change of state.

Pattern

Sentence + 了 (at the end)

Explanation

Sentence-final 了 indicates a change of state — something that wasn't true before is now true.

This is different from verb-了 (completed action). '我饿了' means 'I've become hungry' (I wasn't hungry before, now I am).

Examples

我饿了。

Wǒ è le.

I'm hungry (now).

New state: wasn't hungry → now hungry.

天黑了。

Tiān hēi le.

It's gotten dark.

Change: was light → now dark.

他会说中文了。

Tā huì shuō Zhōngwén le.

He can speak Chinese now.

New ability acquired.

Common Mistakes

Wrong

Confusing 我吃了饭 with 我饿了

Correct

我吃了饭 = I ate. 我饿了 = I've become hungry.

Verb-了 = completed action. Sentence-final 了 = change of state.
