Explanation
而 is a literary connector with multiple functions: contrast (but/yet), progression (and furthermore), and concession (yet/while). It is primarily used in written Chinese.
Unlike 但是 or 可是, 而 is more concise and formal. It connects clauses tightly without a pause, making prose more elegant and compact.
Examples
他的作品简洁而有力。
Tā de zuòpǐn jiǎnjié ér yǒulì.

Common Mistakes
我很累而我不想去。
我很累，所以不想去。/ 我虽累而仍坚持。
而 cannot simply replace 所以 for cause-effect. In spoken Chinese, use 所以. 而 is for contrast or parallel in formal writing.
