HSK 4Sentence Structure

Serial Verb Constructions

Two or more verbs share the same subject in sequence, describing purpose, means, or sequence of actions.

Pattern

Subject + Verb1 + (Object1) + Verb2 + (Object2)

Explanation

In serial verb constructions, two or more verb phrases share the same subject and occur in chronological order. The first action typically enables, leads to, or provides the means for the second action.

Common patterns include: purpose (去商店买东西 - go to the store to buy things), means/method (用筷子吃饭 - use chopsticks to eat), and sequential actions (站起来说 - stand up and speak). No conjunction is needed between the verbs.

Examples

我坐地铁去上班。

Wǒ zuò dìtiě qù shàngbān.

I take the subway to go to work.

Means (坐地铁) + purpose (去上班).

她去图书馆借了几本书。

Tā qù túshūguǎn jiè le jǐ běn shū.

She went to the library and borrowed some books.

他用中文写了一封信。

Tā yòng Zhōngwén xiě le yì fēng xìn.

He wrote a letter in Chinese.

用 introduces the means/tool.

Common Mistakes

Wrong

我去上班和坐地铁。

Correct

我坐地铁去上班。

Serial verbs follow chronological/logical order. The means comes before the purpose. Don't use 和 to connect them.
