Topic-Comment Structure
Chinese often places the topic first, then comments on it, regardless of grammatical role.
Pattern
Topic, + Comment (Subject + Verb + ...)
Explanation
In topic-comment structure, the topic is placed at the beginning of the sentence to establish what is being talked about. The comment then provides information about the topic. The topic does not need to be the grammatical subject.
This structure is very natural in Chinese and allows flexibility. The topic can be an object, a time, a place, or any element the speaker wants to highlight as the frame of discussion.
Examples
这本书我看过了。
Zhè běn shū wǒ kàn guò le.
This book, I've read it.
中国菜我最喜欢四川菜。
Zhōngguó cài wǒ zuì xǐhuān Sìchuān cài.
As for Chinese food, I like Sichuan cuisine the most.
那件事我已经忘了。
Nà jiàn shì wǒ yǐjīng wàng le.
That matter, I've already forgotten it.
Common Mistakes
我看过了这本书。
这本书我看过了。
While grammatically possible, the topic-comment version is more natural when emphasizing the book as the topic.
